ANSWER . :

Any acreage invested will yield you a good return on your investment but FMSL recommends an average of 10 acres.

QUESTION 1

How is security handled by the organisation (FMSL) to combat theft and encroachers?

ANSWER . :

Security is handled by our own trained staff, headed by a senior security person and a staff strength of 10 security men.

Patrolling is done in shifts. Foot patrolling and the use of bicycles and pickups. using guns and mobile phones.

There are security watch towers used to identify bush fires, land encroachers, intruders,grazing cattle,  to combat theft on young seedlings and fruits.


All communication from the various security personnel is linked to the main farm house and the local community radio station (operated by FMSL) for a rapid response team in case of emergency.

How many years does mango take to mature?

ANSWER . :

Mango takes about four (4) years of which the average yield per acre is about 1.5-3 tonnes if it is a well maintained farm .Whilst a 6yrs upwards well maintained mango plantation will give you an average of 5-10 tonnes per acre

How much can an investor earn from an acre of Mango?

ANSWER . :

For the first fruiting (i. e. fourth (4)year), an acre of a well maintained farm of exportable mangoes (1.5-3tonnes) will give you about 10million cedis.

What is the right time to establish a mango plantation in a year?

ANSWER . :

There are two seasons the major (May-July) and minor(Oct- Nov) seasons .

The best period to start a mango plantation(Major season) is December, where you concentrate on land preparation (slash and burn, stomping,etc) but planting is done in May.

QUESTION 5

When will an investor normally harvest their produce?

ANSWER . :

Harvesting mangoes is done in both the major and minor seasons. Major harvesting is done in May-July and minor Dec-Feb

Is there ready market for mangoes?

ANSWER . :

Yes provided you produce exportable mangoes.(This is where FMSL is unique, because of our good maintenance culture)

Who are the major local buyers of mangoes in Ghana?

ANSWER . :

Supermarkets , Hotels , and some processing agencies. However there is a sizable number of exporters who do not have their own farms and they provide the bulk of the ready market.
